Heathrow — Climate-Smart Airport
ESG Storytelling & Public Engagement | Sustainable Aviation
How do you communicate credible climate action from one of the world's largest aviation hubs to an audience that is increasingly skeptical of aviation's environmental impact?
In May 2019, Behind the Greens was invited to Heathrow to investigate how one of the world's busiest airports was approaching the challenge of decarbonisation.
Rather than producing promotional content from a distance, we went behind the scenes to research the airport's sustainability strategy, speak with the people implementing it, and translate complex climate and aviation topics into accessible stories for public audiences.
At the time, Heathrow was investing more than £100 million in sustainability transformation, including electric vehicles and infrastructure, renewable energy, carbon reduction and restoration projects, while developing its Centre of Excellence for Sustainability to explore new solutions for aviation's environmental challenges.

The Communication Potential
Aviation is one of the most difficult sectors to communicate about from a climate perspective.
The public conversation often sits between two extremes: criticism of aviation's emissions and optimism about technological solutions.
Our objective was not to promote aviation uncritically.
It was to investigate what was actually changing behind the passenger experience and give audiences enough context to form a more informed view.
This meant exploring the systems behind a flight.
Heathrow's strategy at the time included incentives for cleaner aircraft, improvements to ground operations, investment in sustainable aviation fuels and the development of new approaches to carbon management.
We designed and delivered a multi-format environmental communication campaign that generated 635K+ documented content views and 340 tracked clicks while translating Heathrow's sustainability initiatives into accessible public narratives.
Our Strategic Role
Behind the Greens led the environmental storytelling and content strategy for the visit.
We:
-
researched Heathrow's sustainability initiatives and the wider aviation climate challenge
-
identified the stories most relevant to a public audience
-
conducted interviews and on-site research
-
translated technical sustainability concepts into accessible narratives
-
challenged assumptions rather than simply repeating corporate messaging
-
created visual and written content across multiple digital formats
-
connected individual innovations to the wider transition toward lower-carbon aviation
The goal was to move the conversation from "Is aviation sustainable?" toward a more useful question:
"What does the transition to lower-carbon aviation actually look like — and what still needs to change?"

Why This Work Matters
This project demonstrated our ability to work at the intersection of corporate sustainability, environmental research and public communication, taking complex ESG subjects and turning them into narratives that people can actually engage with.
For a sector facing significant climate scrutiny, the challenge is not simply communicating that action is happening.
It is communicating what is changing, why it matters, what evidence exists, and where the remaining challenges are.
That is where strategic environmental storytelling can play a role.
Outcome
The project gave Heathrow an external, environmentally focused storytelling perspective while giving audiences access to sustainability initiatives that would otherwise remain largely invisible behind the passenger experience.
Our contribution: translating corporate climate strategy into public-facing environmental communication.
