Renature Monchique

ESG Content & Campaign Case Study | Ecological Restoration & Carbon Strategy

Behind the Greens led storytelling strategy and content production for a corporate-backed ecological restoration initiative in southern Portugal, implemented by GEOTA and funded by Ryanair as part of its carbon offsetting strategy.

Following the 2018 wildfires that burned over 27,000 hectares, the project focuses on long-term forest regeneration, biodiversity restoration, and strengthening climate resilience through native species reforestation.

Strategic Role

We led the storytelling strategy and content production, translating a complex, multi-stakeholder ESG initiative into accessible, engaging narratives designed for public audiences.

Our work focused on:

  • Bridging the gap between technical environmental processes and public understanding

  • Increasing transparency and trust around carbon offsetting initiatives

  • Positioning reforestation as both an ecological and socio-economic system

Approach

Our team conducted on-site research in Monchique, working directly with:

  • project leaders

  • landowners

  • local workers

  • environmental stakeholders

We developed a multi-format content strategy combining:

  • long-form documentary storytelling

  • short-form digital content

  • visual assets for partner communication

The narrative emphasized:

  • climate resilience (not just tree planting)

  • local economic impact

  • long-term ecosystem restoration

Output

  • 1 documentary-style film

  • 50+ high-quality brand visuals

  • 18 short-form videos (Reels/TikTok)

  • 40 social media assets (Stories/ Posts)

  • Multi-platform distribution across partner and owned channels

Distribution

Content was distributed across:

  • GEOTA channels

  • Behind the Greens Media

  • Margreen platforms

Supporting both project visibility and stakeholder communication efforts.

Impact & Contribution

  • Reached 300,000+ users across platforms

  • Contributed to increased visibility of a corporate-backed carbon offset initiative

  • Supported public understanding of ecological restoration as a long-term climate strategy

  • Strengthened narrative trust around carbon offsetting by highlighting transparency, community involvement, and real-world impact

Strategic Significance

This project demonstrates the role of high-quality, narrative-driven content in supporting ESG initiatives by:

  • Translating complexity into engagement

  • Building trust in emerging climate solutions

  • Connecting environmental action with economic and community impact

Behind the Greens led the storytelling strategy for the project, translating a complex, multi-stakeholder ESG initiative into accessible narratives for public audiences.

Through on-site research, stakeholder interviews, and multi-format content production, we contributed to increasing transparency and trust around carbon offsetting, while positioning the project as a long-term climate and community resilience solution.
